      Summer 2013 e-News

Welcome to our Summer edition of the e-News

Welcome to the summer edition of e-news as we rush towards Christmas and for many, HOLIDAYS are nearly with us. With the warm weather comes the last of our pool program and the start of our  HBF open water series. I hope all members are encouraged to participate in this fantastic OWS season that not only tests your fitness but will also help organising clubs with vital fund raising money to support and subsidise club members into next year.

In the winter edition I spoke about MSWA’s membership increase to be the largest membership numbers in the country, and am happy to share that numbers have continued to increase into this summer period and we are now at record numbers. I believe there is a direct correlation with this increase and the wonderful job our clubs are doing in attracting and retaining members. It is also evident that our volunteers and in particular our club coaches, are offering quality coaching sessions which alone is an attraction for adults to join clubs.

In support of this level of coaching I was excited to attend Challenge Stadium on 30 November to witness the first MSWA coaching LiveLighter “Super Clinic”. The clinic co-ordinated by Elena Nesci and ably supported by coaches, Kim Tyler, Kareena Preston and Jon Haines with the support of 'Tricia Summerfield (Director of Coaching) that was attended by 37 club coaches and 57 swimmers from all clubs and was a roaring success. A large group our club coaches were able get to learn from the 4 super coaches and masters swimmers were able to get the benefit of  being coached in a range of strokes including open water skills. The feedback from the coaches was fantastic so keep posted for more LiveLighter “Super Clinics” in 2014 and get in early as they will fill fast after the success of this first clinic.

As we head into Christmas and the holiday season I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Board of MSWA, Wendy, Nadine and myself to wish all members a happy and safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year. We look forward to being of service to you in 2014.

Renewed Your Membership?

Renewing membership & new registrations procedure for 2014 has been available since Sunday 1st December for members to action.  Club Registrars should have provided current members with their personal log-in details (user name & password) via email to complete renewals on-line by 31st January but if not please follow up now with your Club. Manual payments are not permitted and all members are encouraged to check your personal data and update your page on a regular basis.

WA member numbers at all-time high

2013 membership topped 1,576 which is 100 plus more than we have ever had before (1,467 in 1999). Congratulations to those Clubs which gained new members during 2013 but more importantly well done to Clubs which retained their members!  Retention of members is an ongoing focus for MSWA however current members must also be congratulated as you are the best promoters of what is good about joining a Masters Club – it is much more fun swimming with a Masters Club than on your own!   Keep on walking the talk and encourage your family and friends to join your Club.

Annual General Meeting

This important meeting is coming up on Tuesday 18th February and Clubs will be asked to send in a short report of Club highlights and achievements for 2013 for MSWA’s Annual Report.  Presentations at the AGM include the winning Clubs for the 2013 LiveLighter Club Challenge series and the LiveLighter Spring into Swimming membership drive.

LiveLighter Novice Ocean Swim
Fremantle Masters is again conducting this event on behalf of MSWA in conjunction with their Fremantle Ports Swim Thru on Saturday 14th December.  If you are unsure of entering the longer 1.6km event how about starting with the 400m novice swim.  It is not a race, just a leisurely swim around marker buoys under the watchful eyes of surf lifesavers and Fremantle Masters members.  Breakfast is available and spot prizes too.
Membership Growth Success

Membership growth strategies implemented in 2013 through part-time Project Coordinator Nadine Georgiades under Viki Shelver’s Development port-folio has seen a keen group of swimmers commence at Cannington Leisureplex.  Promotional material was provided to Clubs in the past few months for Clubs to promote membership through the LiveLighter Spring into Swimming period.  Some Clubs have been very successful after introducing different sessions including mid-morning during Creche hours.
HBF 2013-14 OWS Series

The first event of the summer season was successfully held at Lake Leschenaultia by Maida Vale Masters last month.  The Fremantle Ports Swim Thru is the next one to enter on the HBF series.  Members are encouraged to support the Masters club-run events which gives you automatic entry into the HBF OWS series with prizes awarded to age group winners at the end of the season.  Get points for your Club too by participating in these great events!  More information via our website www.mswa.asn.au

HBF 2014 State OWS

The annual event is confirmed for SATURDAY 22nd March at Coogee Beach and will again be coordinated by Somerset Masters on behalf of MSWA with event and water support from Coogee Beach SLSC.  Registrations will be via Club Captains and Team Manager entry program as usual.  Look out for entry information which will be on the website in the new year and emailed to clubs for members around the same time.  Check out who is going to swim from your Club and make a morning of it.  Breakfast after the swim is always very good value.
2014 Country Correspondence Carnival
MSWA coordinates this event for country Clubs and it will be conducted in January and February 2014.  Country members are encouraged to participate in the organised meets during these months especially in preparation for the LiveLighter 2014 State Championships to be held in Perth over the weekend of 24th & 25th May.
2014 Pool Events Calendar
The LiveLighter Club Challenge series and Distance Meets calendar is nearly finalised and will be produced by mid December for distribution to members via their Clubs in early January. It will then go onto our website as usual.
LiveLighter Regional Activities

Fremantle’s Head Coach Kim Tyler was busy volunteering again in November when she conducted LiveLighter coaching clinics and coach mentoring at country Clubs in the south.  On her way to Albany Kim conducted 2 sessions at Narrogin on a Friday morning, which meant that the Narrogin Coaches could enjoy one session as a swimmer and the other as a Coach.  Narrogin members cannot wait for Kim’s return visit!

The following day Kim conducted a pool session with Albany members and enthusiastic swimmers from around the Great Southern Region in conjunction with Maida Vale’s Ceinwen Roberts who had travelled to Albany courtesy of the Department of Sport and Recreation as guest presenter.  On the Sunday morning Ceinwen presented again to an enthusiastic group and Kim assisted with the ocean session at Middleton Beach.  Again the feedback was very positive and hopefully Albany club will gain some new members from the promotional exercise.

On the Monday following the Albany weekend Kim conducted the LiveLighter coaching clinic in Bunbury on her way home which again received glowing feedback from enthusiastic members.

Kim will travel to Geraldton in April to conduct another LiveLighter coaching clinic for Masters’ members with a special emphasis on preparation for the LiveLighter 2014 State Championships!

LiveLighter Summer Recipes

Stay on track

Even those dedicated to regular exercise can face a plateau in their progress especially if trying to achieve a healthy weight.

Re-examining your food intake is a great place to start. Start by serving smaller portions with more vegetables and salads and try some healthy, tasty options from LiveLighter like these Beef and Bean Burritos.

On the other hand if it is becoming difficult to stick to your plan then the most effective thing to do is to remind yourself of your goals and make improvements that will suit your lifestyle.
