Spring 2013 e-News

Welcome to our Spring edition of the e-News

Welcome to the Spring edition of e-News.  Now that the days are getting longer and the warmth is back in the sun it's time to plan your fitness program for the forthcoming summer.  If you have had a break over the colder months many of your fellow Masters have not.  Many have kept up their fitness training and speaking to members recently, I learnt that some have competed in the World Masters in Italy, others have been on swim tours in Europe and one member (Ceinwen Roberts) swam in the 45.9km round Manhattan race in 15.5C water temperature and was the 1st female and 4th overall in this event.  The legendary Barbara Pellick, left with her partner, from the Mandurah Club has added to her list of swimming accomplishments with a solo swim of the 32.2km Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to Southern California.  Well done to both ladies for your oustanding efforts.

A number of pool events in the LiveLighter Club Challenge series have also taken place with healthy numbers of members competing.  The culmination of winter pool events was the Golden Groper State Relay (Short Course) carnival run at Challenge Stadium in August.  Host Club Claremont again ran a very slick and friendly carnival with a record number of swimmers.  It was good to see some members participating in their first carnival and others who had not competed since adolescence, get back into it.  Congratulations to Beatty Park Masters on taking home the Golden Groper trophy for Top Club points.

It is heartening to see our membership numbers grow substantially again this year to the point where we now have the largest number of members of any State in Australia.  Well done goes to all Clubs and MSWA for the positive media that our organisation gets which has assisted our membership growth.   With the HBF Open Water Swim series due to kick off in the coming months I look forward to catching up with members at these swims and hope your training for health and fitness finds you Living Lighter.

From the Front Desk

Current members are reminded that 12 month registrations for 2014 can commence from 1st December as long as Clubs have completed the necessary steps online on 30th November (and not before).  Having members regularly update their own data on their page is the aim – have you checked your data page details to ensure it has your up to date personal details?

All Clubs should have loaded their Club 16-month and 4-month membership subscriptions in August for new online registrations between 1st September and 30th November.  If you know of any potential new members wanting to join please make sure your Club has these subscriptions completed online for them to register now.

Congratulations all round

Member numbers in WA have reached an all-time high, with 1,490 members as at 26th August, even before the membership drive period in Spring.  MSWA is thrilled with this success as our ongoing promotions for new members is directed to along with “find your local Club, check out the Club website or make contact to find out when and where and have a go”.  However loss of members is still an issue so we encourage all Clubs to look after new members to ensure they feel nurtured and then they will stay!

Wendy Holtom - Executive Officer

For your information MSWA has a Marketing and Development plan which underpins our annual Operational Plan and the 2012-15 Strategic Plan.  It includes ongoing membership growth projects such as:

  • Cross-promotions with Rottnest Channel Swim Association – identified Clubs (11) which support and have experience and expertise for Rottnest Channel swimmers are listed on the RSCA website and a specific flyer will be provided to attendees at the RSCA Swimmers Seminar in early September.  A membership growth advert will again be included in the 2014 Rottnest Channel race-book to encourage membership of MSWA Clubs
  • Cross-promotions with Triathlon WA - a specific flyer was provided to TriWA for their member mail-out in August which also includes the annual HBF Open Water Swims calendar
  • LiveLighter Spring into Swimming project – we have provided Clubs with promotional material and suggestions for Clubs (which wish to grow) to conduct activities or displays in Spring to take advantage of the discounted 16-month membership fees to gain new members.  Current members can do their bit by being advocates and encouraging family or friends to join up as “it is much more fun swimming with a Club than on your own”
  • Promotional brochure – we have provided a new brochure in time for the LiveLighter Spring into Swimming project so if you have somewhere to display this at your work-place to promote swimming with a Masters Club, please let us know.
  • Sandgropers Club – promotions continue for our “virtual” Club which is now open to metro swimmers as well as country swimmers, however we still encourage membership of our traditional Clubs as first and best option.
HBF 2013/2014 Open Water Swims Calendar

All members should have received a calendar by now as the calendars have been with Clubs for personal distribution to members since 20th August.  Do chase one up when next you swim at a Club session if not yet received.  Metro aquatic centres will receive their allocation for the general open water swimming community in the first week of September and bundles will be sent to other organisations and country pools soon.  We encourage members to support the OWS events conducted by MSWA Clubs where possible and additionally to be a part of the HBF Masters Open Water Series which is for members only.

2014 LiveLighter State Championships

We can now confirm that we will conduct the 2014 LiveLighter State Championships on the weekend of 24th/25th May at Challenge Stadium in Long Course format. We do consider AFL schedules when we can however we need to make the decision earlier now as the meet is part of the National Series and for country Clubs to book accommodation and transport.

Additionally for your information it is not always possible to conduct the State Championships prior to the National Championships however this option is considered annually as part of the philosophy of holding the event in Short Course mode and in country venues once every five years.  It is planned to conduct the 2015 LiveLighter State Championships in Short Course format and hopefully prior to the 2015 National Championships as they will now be in Short Course mode in Hobart (moved from Melbourne).

2014 National Masters Championships

This event is being held in Rockhampton Queensland from 23rd to 26th April with the open water swimming event on the 27th at Yepoon.  Interested members should be sourcing travel and accommodation now and regularly visiting the MSA and Queensland Masters websites to check on event information and updates. Click here for the information flyer.

Black Swans Club

For your information the Black Swans Club was established in 2008 for WA swimmers (water polo players or triathletes) who did not belong to a traditional MSWA Club but wanted to swim at the World Championships here in Perth.

Since then we have tried to re-establish the Club for members who might be the only one or two members from their Club traveling to National or International meets and would like to swim in relays with other WA members as a second claim member of Black Swans.  Or another option is to join a larger participating Club as a second-claim member to be part of their travelling team.  It is a great option to have all WA members together and supporting each other at National or World swim meets and enjoy relay swims.  So if any member is interested for Rockhampton 2014 please let me know by 31st October 2013.

Masters National Coaching Courses

MSWA is performing very well in regard to ongoing coach education with accredited courses being conducted often (21 potential new Club Coaches have commenced their training recently) and regular PD workshops for accredited current Club Coaches as part of their updating program.

Coaching Clinics are tentatively planned for Saturday afternoon 30th November at Challenge Stadium for both swimmers and Coaches.  Pencil in the date now if you are keen to participate as a swimmer in sessions to be conducted by some of Masters top Coaches.  The sessions will also be ideal for accredited and trainee Intro & Club Coaches to observe and learn more about stroke correction at the same time.  Stay in touch via FaceBook and our website for updated information on this and other activities.

Technical Officiating Courses

Technical Education Coordinator Ken Phillips is keen to conduct specific officiating workshops or courses at your Club. Please consider your Club’s needs and how you can help as a volunteer official - let Ken know via .  We need you!

Audrey's Million Metres - The Impossible Dream

In September 2006 a large, nervous, frumpy Audrey in a very 1950s conservative swim costume entered the pool at Challenge Stadium, as a guest of Pat.

Every 25m she would stop, hang onto the side in the slow lane and have a rest. After a few weeks she managed to get to the end of the 50m lane and would rest with a long chat before setting off for the return lap.

She well remembered saying to Pat, ‘Will I ever be able to turn and make it back to the other end without stopping?’

Pat’s reply, ‘Instead of stopping at the end, turn, take a few strokes, then stop for your rest!’
