President's Piece

On behalf of the Board of Masters Swimming WA I would like to thank all members and supporters who participated in the LiveLighter 2013 State Championships held at Challenge Stadium over the weekend of the 25/26th May.  Like previous State Championships this was also an outstanding success with 285 participants from 28 clubs.

It was great to see a number of country clubs represented, Mandurah, Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany who made the trip, with Geraldton taking out top country club, and were not too far behind the eventual winners Claremont. It was also good to have Bay View Saints field a team in their first State Championship since affiliating late last year.

While many swimmers achieved outstanding swims to record personal bests a large number of State and many Australian records were recorded over the weekend. Congratulations to all swimmers whether you broke your personal bests or State and Australian records.

The Board also wishes to thank Sandra Mutch, Peter Maloney, Wendy Holtom, Ron Gray and his band of officials, and all the volunteers who gave their time freely before and over the length of the weekend. Your volunteering, enthusiasm and expertise in your particular field of swimming is much appreciated.

For those at the presentation afterwards, a reminder of an outstanding past volunteer was recognised with the presentation of the inaugural Perc Edwards Volunteer of the Year Award, presented by the children of the late Perc Edwards. In a very moving and sometime humorous speech by son, Tony, a very good account of Perc’s outstanding volunteering to many organisations including Masters Swimming was highlighted. Congratulations go to Wayne Cable from Mandurah for being the winner of this inaugural prestigious award.

Annual awards for the 2012/13 HBF Open Water Series, numerous Australian record certificates, certificates of commendations, coach of the year, official of the year, Club awards and an award to Ivan Wingate for 40 years of officiating service to Masters Swimming were presented. Congratulations to all those individuals and clubs who received awards.

Two trophies awarded at the presentations were for the 2013 HBF State OWS event at Coogee Beach in March. The top team award was taken out by Perth City and the team performance award went to Westcoast. We had a large number of participants at this event again this year and had pleasant conditions on the day. This event was hosted once again by the terrific Somerset Club whose members did a wonderful job in ensuring it was well run. Thanks again Somerset.

With winter just around the corner I wish you all well in the colder months and please keep up your swimming to keep healthy and LiveLighter.

 Gary Bradley - President

From The Front Desk

  1. 2013 HBF State OWS Championship

Another successful open water event was held at Coogee Beach on Sunday 24th March.  Congrats to the 225 participants.  Many thanks to our Somerset Club for once again conducting a great event on behalf of MSWA.  Special thanks to the officials Peter Maloney, Ron Gray, Des Seery and Warren Cassidy.   Director of Recording Sandra Mutch managed to swim as well as coordinate the results with Blue-Chip.  Coogee Beach Surf Club also contributed to the event with their great venue, course set up and water safety roles.  MSWA much appreciates all these groups for their outstanding efforts. Next year will be different with the course being set out from the new Coogee Beach Surf Club.

Congratulations to all participants in the HBF 2012/13 Open Water Series and special congratulations to Melville's Rowena Burch and Perth City's Jon Haines as overall winners.

  1. LiveLighter 2013 State Championships

This great event was held on 25/26 May at Challenge Stadium with 285 swimmers and our wonderful volunteers, officials and supporters.  Everyone had a great time not only in the pool but out of it at the social activities.  Thanks to Peter Maloney and Sandra Mutch for running a great meet along with the Technical Officials and volunteers and our supporters behind the scenes.  See full results listed elsewhere in E-News.

  1. Potential New Clubs

It is that time of the year when we investigate and work with pool management on establishing Clubs at aquatic centres where interest is possible.  The new Cannington Leisureplex and UWA are in our sights at present although we know Armadale have commenced their winter sessions at Cannington, which might assist our strategies in the first instance.

  1. Coach Accreditation Updates

The annual workshops for qualified coaches have been set for 2013.  Saturday 22nd June will see 15 Club Coaches attend a PD session with Claremont’s Elena Nesci.  The session will be repeated on September 7th if need be or different topics will be selected according to ideas suggested.  Coaches will be advised again by direct email when more details are confirmed.

  1. Accredited Coach Courses

As advised to Clubs recently the next Intro Coach Course which will be held on 24th August is full, however we are holding a wait list in case registered participants withdraw.  If you are interested in becoming an accredited Coach and assisting your Club please let me know via email.

       6.   Autumn National Meeting Highlights

  • Members must log on at least yearly and update their own data whenever personal details change ie. Address, email, etc.
  • National Swim Series will be launched for 2013/14 year with one event in each State to be identified for inclusion.

  • WA’s motion to rescind the non-member $5.00 fee for OWS events conducted by MSWA Clubs was lost.
  • 2014 National Championships to be held 23-27 April in Rockhampton.  All members are encouraged to look at travelling to northern Queensland to enjoy a holiday and the swim meet.

        7.   May Council of Clubs Meeting Highlights

  • Membership fees for 2014 remain the same as 2013.
  • Proposed annual Club Affiliation fee change of criteria was agreed.  Clubs to now pay annual base fee of $10.00 plus $1.00 per registered member to a maximum of $85.00.
  • Proposed revised criteria for Special Projects Funding was agreed to encourage more Club applications.
  • Meeting was advised that criteria for Top Team award in annual State OWS championships would be investigated and recommendation developed for Council of Clubs meeting later in 2013.
  • Member Protection Information Officer Heather Adams is continuing in the role and members are advised to make contact with Heather via the MSWA office if any issues arise at Club level that necessitate personal assistance.

      8.    Membership Growth Update

As at the end of April member numbers reached 1,400 which is very pleasing, being approximately 100 more than at the same time last year.  MSWA is encouraged that our ongoing external promotions conducted contribute to growth at Clubs eg. The West Australian’s Mind and Body section in March, Seniors Have a Go Day each November etc.  Additionally we know that many Clubs conduct promotional activities at the same time and are to be congratulated for gaining new members and retaining!  New members will stay if they feel welcome and are looked after so all members can do their bit to help.

Ivan Wingate retires

Additionally at the presentations following the LiveLighter 2013 State Championships we presented retiring Technical Official Ivan Wingate from Mandurah Masters with a small gift of appreciation for his outstanding officiating service which commenced in 1978 in South Australia.  Ivan also served our sport over several years as the National Executive Director and as President of Masters Swimming Australia, although not at the same time!

Oustanding Service to Masters Swimming WA Award

There are many people who provide wonderful volunteer service to our organisation and we try to recognise them all in some way.  This year’s winner is one of the most outstanding volunteers we have been fortunate to have on our team during the past 8 years. This member has served our sport over many years in different areas and at every level.  To go through the pages of achievements for Fremantle’s Kim Tyler would take the rest of the afternoon.  Suffice to say we will mention just a few of her outstanding achievements:

  • Director of Coaching (was known as Swimming) in 2005 and 2006 which included development of a Coaches survey and the current and invaluable Coaches email database
  • Leadership, people management skills and IT expertise together with her strategic capabilities at Board level enhanced her outstanding contributions to both our Strategic and Operational Plans
  • Coordination and recording roles in States, Nationals and Worlds from 2005 to 2011 including delivery of workshops for Club recorders with Sandra Mutch
  • Presentations at former Level 1 Masters Coaching Courses over several years
  • Establishment of program for external Coach to conduct a total of 30 coaching clinics at clubs in 2006 and 2007 which also included Coach mentoring.
  • Course development and the main presenter at Intro and Club Coach Courses since 2011, including revision of content delivery to ensure all participants achieved to the best of their abilities
  • Proactive strategy development and implementation of Regional coaching program over the past 2 years which has seen Kim travel to Bunbury, Albany, Narrogin and recently to Geraldton to deliver coaching clinics for members and PD for Coaches. This also included provision of yearly laminated programs.  All Clubs provided overwhelmingly positive feedback as a major benefit for country members and want her back soon.
  • Kim is a people-person and an instigator and her capacity to see the big picture has been instrumental to our achievements during this time.
Perc Edwards Award

This inaugural award has been established to recognize outstanding contributions at Club level and named after one of our great and long-serving volunteers Perc Edwards, who sadly passed away in 2012.

There were some outstanding nominations however the winner for 2012 is Mandurah’s Wayne Cable for his outstanding volunteer efforts at his Club.  And to list a few of his achievements in addition to his being Club President for the past 4 years:

  • He has been the driving force behind Mandurah’s annual OWS event including sourcing and gaining sponsorship to ensure its economic viability.
  • In 2009 he completed the Masters coaching accreditation and continues to coach regularly.
  • Wayne introduced ocean swimming in 2010 as a club activity on Saturday mornings and participant numbers continue to grow.
  • Club membership has grown from 60 – 90 in Wayne’s presidency period.

Club Coach Course
The club coach course was held at Challenge Stadium in March and was presented by Kym Tyler and Elena Nesci.   Coaches from a range of clubs are now completing their deck hours to become accredited.
Coach, Volunteer and Official Industry Nominations

Congratulations are extended to Albany’s Kaye Bolger and Superfins’ Jan Saunders on their volunteer awards received at a recent Swimming WA awards breakfast.

Additionally several MSWA Coaches and Officials were awarded commendation certificates from the Department of Sport and Recreation for their ongoing volunteer efforts over the past year:

  • Officiating – Sue Pow (Beatty Park), Pamela Walter (Stadium Snappers), Ivan Wingate (Mandurah), Ken Phillips (Mandurah) and Des Seery (Mandurah)

Masters Swimming WA nominated Pamela Hall from Bunbury as our 2012 Swimming Coach and Ron Gray from Thornlie as our 2012 Swimming Official to the Annual State Government Sport and Recreation Industry Awards.

Have a Go News Encouragement Awards

At the presentations for the LiveLighter 2013 State Championships on Sunday 26th May at Challenge Stadium four Masters members were rewarded with a gift courtesy of Have a Go News for their enthusiasm and volunteering at their Clubs.

However it was unfortunate that the Have a Go News Editor Judith Treby and Sub-Editor Jennifer Merigan could not attend due to a family illness.  Their ongoing support of MSWA has been outstanding over many years.

Geraldton’s Jan Gill, Claremont’s Anthony Blake, Superfins’ Shirley Lawrence and Armadale’s Nigel Chaytor were presented with their embroidered towel by President of Swimming WA Jeanette Bailey who was a special guest at the presentations.

Three of the four Have a Go News Encouragement award winners had participated in the annual LiveLighter State Championships for the first time, with the fourth winner swimming in only her second State event. Their enthusiasm at the State event was most evident and they all impressed as a valued member of their Club team.

All four winners have not only been contributing to the operations of their own Club since joining but were the first to volunteer to assist at the Livelighter 2013 State Championships, whether as a timekeeper or in a supervisory role for warm-ups.
