George Corones

At 95, George Corones is inspiring MSA swimmers all over Australia! Three months into 2013, George has already set four provisional World Records, including in the 100 Free and 50 Free at the MSQ State Short Course Championships. The Twin Towns (MSQ) member, who is also a Second Claim member with Malvern Marlins (MSV) also has a great understanding of the motivational forces, that drive humans to achieve.

Changes to the Australian Coaching Database

The Australian Sports Commission has withdrawn the funding for the SAO database of accredited coaches.

Access to SAO by individual coaches and officials is no longer available. Individual coaches and officials attempting to register or log on to their SAO accounts will be referred back to Masters Swimming Australia. New registrations for SAO access were discontinued in October 2012.

In the case of existing registered coaches and officials, an email was sent to each person advising them of the changes and referring them to their NSO for future access to accreditation information. Access to SAO for these coaches and officials was turned off in December 2012.

Masters Swimming Australia will continue to provide a certificate for each coach that completes their Coaching Accreditation and keep an ACCESS data base for all coaches. MSA also provide each newly accredited or renewing coach a certificate that provides the date  when their accreditation will expire, ID number & the level of the Award. So they get this advice separate to the ASC system & this will continue.

Endurance 1000

In January, the Endurance 1000 Results were made available on the MSV website. MSV would like to congratulate Talays Masters (MSTas) for winning the Trophy and to Campbelltown Collegians (MSNSW) for winning the Award.

Top 10 - 2012 Endurance 1000 Top Scoring Clubs (Trophy) & Average Points per member (Award) can be found HERE. To see ALL results for individuals, clubs (Branch and National) click the "Endurance 1000" button on the top right of the MSV website.

Congratulations to all clubs and individuals on their efforts for 2012! Remember if you swam in an event that is listed in the Results Portal over an Endurance 1000 distance - that swim is automatically uploaded into the Endurance 1000 results.

Thank you to Pauline Samson, the National Recorder, for her work over the last 18 months on this online program.

2013 National Championships - SYDNEY

MSA is pleased to announce that there will be 688 competitors at the 2013 Masters Swimming National Championships in Sydney! On top of this, 238 guests will be attending the Presentation dinner (bookings still open).

At 11am on Thursday 18th, the Governor of New South Wales will officially open the Championships, with X-Factor sensation Bella Ferraro also performing. MSA and MSNSW urges all competitors and their guests to attend the official opening even if they are not competing at that time.

All swimmers competing that morning in events 2, 3 and 4, are asked to please be patient while the proceedings take place. The recognition of master athletes and, importantly for us, Masters Swimmers on the national stage is imperative to grow and share our sport.

MSA wishes all members the best of luck at the event. Make sure you send us your stories and photos!

Seven Deadly Mistakes made by Masters Athletes
By Peter Reaburn

Forty five years of competing at state, national and international level have taught me many lessons. The last 25 of these years have been in competitive masters sport and been associated with a PhD on ‘lifetime athletes’ and ongoing research on masters athletes. Based on this experience and knowledge, this article is what I see as the 7 most common training mistakes older athletes make, especially for those masters athletes coming back into competitive sport after many years away.
