President's Piece

Firstly, may I introduce myself to you - my name is Gary Bradley and I am a member of the new Bay View Saints Masters Club. I am delighted to have been appointed to the position of President and look forward to working with Clubs, Members and the Board to ensure that we have another successful and enjoyable season.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all existing members and extend a special welcome to new members for the 2013 season. Compliments to those members who competed in the Rottnest Channel Swim or volunteered their time to the event as it was certainly a great Masters turn-out.  It is encouraging  to see the number of members who have started the year by entering swims in our HBF Open Water Series or challenging themselves in inter-club pool competitions.  With a busy swim program ahead all eyes are firmly fixed on our next big event, the 2013 HBF State Open Water Championship in March.

Thanks go to Club delegates who recently attended the AGM and Council of Clubs in February. The sharing of Club information was again encouraging and to see the variety of club activities taking place is a sure bonus to gain and retain members. A number of awards were also presented at the AGM and Council of Clubs.  Congratulations go to Fremantle for winning the 2012 Improvement Factor award and to Somerset as runner-up.  Superfins won the Average Points award with Beatty Park Masters (formerly Osborne Park) runner-up.   Lillian Hadley from Stadium Snappers was presented with a 10 year excellence award for services to MSWA and Fremantle’s Kim Tyler was awarded a 5 year merit service award. On behalf of all members I thank and commend you both on giving so freely of your time to the benefit of so many.

We also welcomed to the Board Viki Shelver from Westcoast as Director of Development.  Gratitude was expressed to our outgoing President Ivan Martinovich, who over the last 4 years has done a magnificent job in his role and has dedicated much of his valuable time to the betterment of Masters Swimming in W.A. Thankyou Ivan.

I look forward to meeting members throughout the year and hope you all have and healthy and successful 2013 swimming year.

 Gary Bradley - President

From The Front Desk

“It is all about you": As a member of Masters Swimming WA you have your own IMG datapage and we rely on you to keep it up to date with your personal information, especially your emergency contact and other contact details.  Your Club registrar should oversee member data to ensure the list of emergency contacts is kept up to date and is available at Club training sessions or activities.  Please login and check your data now, as you may have moved house, changed email or phone etc and the database is the central information source for Club personnel, thanks.

Geraldton Masters 20th Anniversary

Geraldton Masters is having a 20th Anniversary Celebration on Friday 10th May 2013 at the Colonial Room in the Geraldton Beach Hotel commencing at 6.00pm. We would like to let as many members, past and present, know about  the upcoming event as some of them, are now swimming with other clubs. They have managed to collect a list of over 200 past members but a lot have moved out of town and they have no current address.  If anybody would like further information or can share details of past members they should contact our President, Carol on 9921 3364.

Attached is a copy of the first annual report from Geraldton Masters in 1993 when there was only one member, Norma Sutherland, who is still a current member today along with Muriel Collis who is also still swimming with the club.  By the end of 1994 the club was up to 39 financial members.

On behalf of Geraldton Masters please forward the reunion details to anyone who may have had an association with them in the past as it is sure to be a fun reunion given that Geraldton have the reputation as the "noisy fun club"!!!

Bold Park Masters

In December, some 50 people turned out at City Beach for the Anne Donkin Memorial Open Water Swim and breakfast barbecue.  Anne was an inspirational and much loved  member of Bold Park Masters who, after a tough and courageous battle, finally succumbed to her illness a few short months ago.  It was fitting that this year's open water swim should be held in her honour.
