President's Piece

Merry Christmas to all our members.  Please have a safe and relaxing time during the festive season. If and when summer decides to get here you will all be able to get out and start your summer fitness campaigns in earnest. I know lots of you have partaken in some of the open water events already and I thank you for supporting the Masters clubs that have conducted them. You will be earning points towards the HBF Masters open water swim series.

I know there are many clubs and members that are already working on the Rottnest Channel Swim whether it be training or organising logistics.  I take this this time to wish you the best of luck and hope you all achieve your dreams.  May the weather gods be good to you also.

As this is my last Presidents’ report before I stand down at the AGM in February I would like to thank the many wonderful people who I have met and worked with over the last four years as State President.  I am still often amazed by the enthusiasm and energy that our members give to swimming.

Keep on swimming and have a great festive season.

Congratulations to those Clubs which gained new members during 2012 but more importantly well done to those Clubs which retained their members!  Retention of members is a key focus for MSWA for the upcoming year.

How can MSWA assist Clubs to ensure new members stay after the first week or month?  We feel the secret is the “welcome table” and Club Presidents learnt about this in 2010 from a presentation at the annual Club Presidents meeting.  If Clubs have a designated “new member” person or a roster of members who can welcome any new members and “hold their hands” for a few weeks or months to ensure they feel part of the Club, we are sure retention of members will increase in leaps and bounds.

However we know that members join their Club to swim and have fun so sometimes personnel are limited to manage this very important role.  Sometimes it falls to the coach on deck and more often than not the Coach is not the right person to welcome potential new members as he/she is busy working with the members in the water.  One Club has a non-swimmer partner of a member who manages this job on a regular basis, and with success.

Annual General Meeting
This important meeting is coming up on Tuesday 19th February and Clubs have been asked to send in a short report of highlights and achievements for 2012 for MSWA’s Annual Report.  Presentations at the AGM include the winning Clubs for the 2012 Be Active Club Challenge (BACC) series and the Be Active Spring into Swimming membership drive.  This will be last time we mention “Be Active”, as our new health message related to our sponsorship with Healthway, is “LiveLighter”.

Wendy Holtom - Executive Officer

Renewed Your Membership?
Renewing membership & new registrations procedure for 2012 has been available since 1st December and members must follow the Clubs On-line instructions (see front page at www.mswa.asn.au ) to pay on-line, as manual payments are not accepted. Club Registrars should have provided current members with their personal log-in details (user name & password) via email to complete renewals by 31st January but if not please follow up now.
Black Swans Club - VIRTUAL
Members should already be planning their trip to Sydney. However if your Club has only a couple or individual members wishing to participate can you please suggest they consider second claim membership with Black Swans to join up with other small Clubs. Somerset have indicated they have 2 members keen to go and I can facilitate this proposal re a meeting in January or February and relevant TM entry. Please have any interested members get back to me by Monday 14th January 2013.
2013 Country Correspondence Carnival
MSWA coordinates this event for country Clubs and it will be conducted in January and February 2013. Country members are encouraged to participate in the organised meets during these months especially in preparation for the LiveLighter 2013 State Championships to be held in Perth over the weekend of 25th & 26th May.
2013 Pool Events Calendar

The LiveLighter Club Challenge series and Distance Meets calendar is nearly finalised and will be produced by mid December for distribution to members via their Clubs in early January.

LiveLighter 2013 State Championships – 25/26 May
Final information on entry fees and function costs including entry forms will be available in the new year. Most important is our country Clubs organising accommodation and transport, and hopefully this is underway.

2013 HBF Masters State OWS event
The annual event is confirmed for SUNDAY 24th March at Coogee Beach and will again be coordinated by Somerset Masters on behalf of MSWA with event and water support from Coogee Beach SLSC. Entry will be via Club Captains and Team Manager file as usual. This provides the opportunity for Clubs to promote participation and have a great day together.
Coaching

Masters National Coaching Courses
The new Coaching Courses which replaced the old Level 1 Masters Course commenced in 2011 and we have conducted another Intro Coach Course this month followed by the Club Coach Course in March 2013. Director of Coaching ‘Tricia Summerfield has coordinated the courses with presenters Kim Tyler (Fremantle) and Elena Nesci (Claremont) and it is hoped to conduct the courses again in 2013.

Coach PD Workshops
We have once again conducted two workshops in 2012 for Club Coaches wanting to refresh and update their accreditation. The topic for the 2012 workshop was suggested by a Club Coach and we are asking that question again now. If you are a Club Coach what do you suggest as topics for the 2013 workshops? It might be a practical session on strokes etc as the recent workshop’s topic was theory. We would be planning this for February so ideas for topics by the end of January would be excellent.

Vale Perc Edwards

Masters Swimming WA has lost a legendary member, a most generous volunteer and fantastic role model.  Claremont’s Perc Edwards collapsed after his regular swim, last month, with mates and could not be revived. Perc has been a Technical Official for MSWA for most of his 21 years with Claremont and many members will remember his jovial manner, his jaunty step and also him calling all the girls “sweetie”! We will miss you and your wonderful smile Perc. RIP.

Perc Edwards Volunteer of the Year Award

MSWA Board and Clubs present at the Council of Clubs in November unanimously agreed to honour the late Perc Edwards with the naming rights to the Volunteer of the Year Award.  The inaugural award will be presented by one of Perc's family at the 2013 Awards night.

Barracudas Aquaholics 2012 English Channel Relay Team

Sue Oldham a Barracuda Masters member set out to yet again conquer the English Channel after completing two solo swims prior to this swim.    Sue is the oldest woman to swim solo across the Channel.  Her team consisted of Kathy Phillips, Roger Allsopp, who is the oldest person to swim solo across the English Channelat age 71 and Tom McCarthy from Ireland.  Sue is third from left in the photo.

Although the water was as cold as around 13 degrees they did the swim in 15 hours 3 minutes.  As yet they are still waiting confirmation to see if they are the oldest four man relay team for the season.

HBF Masters Swimming WA Open Water Swims Series

Keen open water swimming members will be well into the OWS season by now and all should be aware of our OWS Series (see back of HBF 2012/13 OWS calendar) which is only open to MSWA members.  Members earn points for OWS events run by MSWA Clubs so if aiming to be in with a chance to top your age-group at the end of the summer season, you should read the information sheet attached or via our website www.mswa.asn.au .

Membership Growth Success

Central Aquatics

WA member numbers stable at 1,434 (1,442 in 2011).

Membership growth strategies implemented in 2012 through part-time Project Coordinator Nadine Georgiades under Gary Bradley’s Development port-folio has seen Bay View Saints at St Hildas Girls School commence in August.  The group swimming at Claremont Pool did not move forward to become a Masters Club with some keen swimmers now members at Bay View Saints.

Information sessions have been run recently at Geraldton and Central Aquatics to assist them with membership growth.  Ballajura and Thornlie have done some local pool promotions and we are in discussion with several smaller and new clubs for membership growth strategies for the new year.  There are also discussions with several other potential clubs both locally and in the country.

Westcoast Masters

Another great year for Westcoast!  We have ended the year with 114 registered members.  Lane usage has stayed steady and our swimmers continue to benefit from our excellent training programme.  Our coaching roster has drawn from over twenty volunteer coaches, under the guidance of head coach, Alan Power. Although our club is not always in there for the competition, our fitness programme is very successful.
