  President's Piece

Two Masters initiatives have been successful in recent months:

1. HBF Sponsorship

We are thrilled to announce that our MSWA open water program will be sponsored by HBF for 2 years.  This is a major coup for MSWA as HBF is the major naming-rights sponsor for the annual Rottnest Channel Swim, so we have a great “fit” with HBF promoting the wonderful benefits of swimming for health and fitness!

Most members will remember the sponsorship from Dale Alcock from past years, which included the annual Masters OWS Series and the MSWA State OWS Championship. In addition to these two MSWA activities (which are for members only), the HBF sponsored open water program includes naming rights of the annual Open Water Swims calendar.

The eight Masters Clubs conducting OWS events as part of the HBF Masters Open Water Series will receive some financial support towards their event for prizes as part of the sponsorship with MSWA.  We encourage all members to support our Masters Clubs by participating in their events over summer, especially as the events will be well supervised, and to earn points in the HBF Masters Open Water Series ie. enter Masters Club-run events as first preference!

2. Country Coaching Clinics

In August one of our most experienced and well-respected Coaches, Kim Tyler of Fremantle Masters, travelled to Bunbury, Albany and Narrogin and conducted coaching clinics for members and also mentored Club Coaches.  Feedback received from the 3 Clubs has been excellent, with members and Coaches thrilled with their sessions and now very motivated to improve their swimming.  Coaches and members were also very pleased to receive the box of laminated training programs (12 months) which Kim provided as part of MSWA’s support for our country Clubs.

To all our members we hope you are well and truly back in the water or upping your sessions as we head into the summer season of open water swimming.  Ocean events will be well supported by Surf Life Saving WA and its Clubs.

All Clubs should have loaded their Club 16 month and 4 month membership subscriptions by now for new online registrations between 1st September and 30th November.  If you know of any potential new members wanting to join please make sure your Club has the discount membership completed online for them to register now.

All current members are reminded that 12 month registrations for 2013 can commence from 1st December as long as Clubs have completed the necessary steps online on 30th November (and not before).  Having members in control of their own registrations and data is the aim, as the administration load and expenses for Clubs and volunteers is then reduced substantially!

HBF 2012/13 Open Water Swims Calendar

All members should have received a calendar by now as they have been with Clubs for distribution since late August.  Do chase one up when next you swim at a Club session if not yet received.  Metro aquatic centres have received their allocation for the general open water swimming community and bundles will be sent to other organisations and country pools this month.  We encourage members to support the OWS events conducted by MSWA Clubs where possible and additionally to be a part of the HBF Masters Open Water Series.  Participation is the name of the game!

Ocean swimming issues

Related to open water events, those conducted in the ocean will be well supervised and supported by Surf Life Saving Clubs, so it is actually the safest time to swim in the ocean!  Guidelines are being updated by the State Government and Surf Life Saving WA as we speak for Event Coordinators/Race Directors to ensure communications and procedures are clear and consistent across all events.

Social Media

Unfortunately the proposed Social Media workshop to be held in November is not going ahead due to lack of interest. The objective of bringing Loren Bartley who was the former National CEO over from Melbourne to present the 2-day workshop was too expensive for so few numbers even with MSWA subsidies. The Clubs which registered will be refunded this month.  However I will investigate holding a session with a local presenter in the future although it won’t have the “Masters specific/focus” content that we had planned with Loren.  We feel that social media can help spread the word about Masters Swimming and its Clubs, especially to the younger brigade, so stay tuned.

History of our People

Our wonderful part-time Project Coordinator Nadine has been developing this project over several months for the website and it will soon be live.  Our aim is to record and recognise our members who have contributed to this great sport since its commencement in 1977.  Board members, State Officers and other committee volunteers will be listed along with award winners and nominees both internal and external.  Initially it will be basic however when time and resources permit we might be able to add photos, so we don’t forget our wonderful volunteers!

2013 State Championships

A few months ago we advised via the E-News that 2 weekends had been booked in May 2013 for this event.  We can now confirm that we will conduct the 2013 MSWA State Championships on the weekend of 25/26th May at Challenge Stadium. If it is the same weekend as the AFL Western Derby you can still swim and see the game!  We could not wait any longer to make the decision as country Clubs have to book accommodation and transport now.

Additionally for your information it is not always possible to conduct the State Championships prior to the National Championships however this option is considered annually as part of the philosophy of holding the event in short course mode and in country venues.

Black Swans Club

Queries were received again last year on the aim of this virtual Club.  It was established in 2008 for WA members wishing to band together to swim at World swim meets and mainly to form relay teams.  However it is possible for current WA members travelling to interstate meets to band together to swim as a second-claim Black Swans Club member ie. Pan Pacs or Nationals where only 1 or 2 members are going from your Club.  Or join a larger participating Club as a second-claim member to be part of a team.

Masters National Coaching Courses

We have conducted 2 rounds of the Intro and Club Coach Courses within the past year and will conduct another Intro Coaching Course in November if there is enough interest.  Please advise me via email by end of September if keen to participate, as we need a few more participants for it to happen.

Technical Officiating Courses

Technical Education Coordinator Ken Phillips is keen to conduct workshops or courses at Country Clubs. Please consider your Club’s needs and how you can help as a volunteer official - let Ken know via wendy@mswa.asn.au .

Membership Growth Projects

Our Project Coordinator Nadine Georgiades is working on several projects including new club development.  Bayview Saints Masters has commenced at St Hildas Girls School in Mosman Park with great support from the school for their families involvement as well as the local community.

Small Clubs Workshop

This was conducted last Saturday with special guest speakers Viki Shelver from Westcoast and Kim Klug from Stadium Snappers, thanks again.  Viki and Kim provided an insight to planning and activities conducted at their Clubs which will hopefully motivate the new and smaller Clubs in future. The sharing of information in face-to-face sessions once again proved successful and highlighted the fact that we need to do more of this so that the new and smaller Clubs learn from experience and feel comfortable enough to pick up the phone for queries or support, or to attend a swim meet.  Both Ballajura and Central Aquatic Clubs expressed enthusiasm to participate in OWS events this coming summer so keep an eye out for them and make them welcome.

Special Projects Funding to Clubs

This current funding project has finished and a new set of criteria for use of allocated funds from the MSWA Investment Account will be developed for 2013 and beyond.  If your Club has not been successful in obtaining funds to purchase Club gear or equipment etc in the past 5 years keep your eyes out in early 2013 for the new criteria.

2013 HBF Masters State OWS

The date is set for SUNDAY 24th March at Coogee Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Entry will be via Club Captains and Team Manager program to Director of Recording Sandra Mutch.

  New Club
Masters Swimming WA welcomes aboard new club Bay View Saints.  Adrian Davini, head coach, says the following:

"The new Bay View Saints Masters Swim club is located at St Hilda’s amazing new geothermally heated 50m Pool on Palmerston St,  Mosman Park, Perth.

Training will commence on Tuesday September 4th. Training times will be Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6.30pm. The sessions will go between one hour and 1.5 hours. We may go to a third session each week if we have the numbers and demand for it. The sessions will be taken by one of our many skilled and qualified coaches. We will be open to  the St Hilda’s community but we also hope to attract local members as space allows.

We are hoping to build a good swimming culture here at Bay View where swimming is not only your way to get fitter and faster but a good way to develop broader community engagement .  We want to be a strong club that is well represented at local and national swimming meets."

2012 FINA World Championships in Riccione, Italy

Two of our West Australian Masters Swimmers headed off in an official capacity to the World Championships early this year, Ron Gray (Thornlie Masters) and Warren Cassidy (Fremantle Masters).

Warren writes:

What a swim meet after reading all the figures what an event for the organisers.  Ron Gray and I arrived a week before the event in order to sight see and over come travel.  Many others officials arrived a lot later with no time to recover. Our hotel was a four star family hotel with great food and 10mins on a bike to the pool. When the swimming started our program was 7.30am start with a supplied lunch at 12.00-- 12.30.  3hrs break time to ride home have a sleep then back by 3pm. The swimming stopped when all the heats were over sometimes 11pm once it was 12pm. All the international officials were stationed in the indoor pool for the whole event. We were all in set positions for the event, there was an am starter and ref and a pm ref and starter.  The pm shift had the longest hours with no change or break.

The whistle system used by the UK ref was a little different to the Australian one.  He used 4 long callup and1 long on the blocks.   It was great to be with some top officials, everyone got on really well, with dinners after a days work.  Thanks for my nomination it was a great honour.

Mandurah Mannas Swim the English Channel

On the 5th July 2012 the Mandurah Mannas Relay Team attempted and conquered the English Channel.  With an average age of 59 the team took 14 hours and 44 minutes to swim 45km to make the 34km crossing of the English Channel.

Congratulations to the team pictured left; John Reyburn, Deborah Bloor, Ray Reynolds, Sue Giles and Ken Phillips.

  Technical News

The last few weeks have been a really busy time for the WA Masters Officiating Team with numerous events being held in and around Perth. As many of you know Ron Gray  was away in Italy for the whole of June and I would very much like to thank the whole Team for attending and officiating at all of these Events. We have received some very positive emails from the Host Clubs thanking you all for your efforts. Brian Harper co-ordinated these events for Masters and on behalf of myself and Ron Gray we would like to personally thank him and the other Chief Referees who controlled each event.

Armadale Masters

The last couple of months attendance has dropped off a little due to illness and some members having to undergo surgery and also because some members thought they needed a holiday!! We have been training at St Brigid's College since May of this year and are due back in Armadale early October. Our morning teas on Saturday at the Melville Rose Gardens are very pleasant with most enjoying their 'breakfasts' after having put so much into their training!! We have also been fortunate enough to have had three new members join our ranks during the winter period.

Read here for more Armadale Masters Club news and news about all the other clubs!!
