  President's Piece

Welcome to the last edition of Different Strokes for the 2011 year. Some of you are probably thinking where has the year gone and Christmas is here already, OMG. I would like to inform you of a few happenings over the last three months that you may have missed.

We have made a new State Board appointment and I would like to officially welcome Kaye Bolger from the Albany club who is now the Director of Finance, Kaye brings a vast experience from the financial field to this position being involved at a professional level. Kaye is also involved as a Technical Official with Swimming WA as well as Masters Swimming, so she will no doubt be a valued member of our board. Welcome Kaye.

To be organized for next year pencil in your diary NOW the State Championships to be held in Bunbury on Sunday 4th and Monday the 5th of March 2012.  What a wonderful pool they have and I know much planning is happening to make this event a most enjoyable and fun weekend for all. There is also the annual Bunbury Surf Club Old Boys swim thru on the Saturday so keep an eye out for that as well. Hope to see you there.

All in a days work, I think not, one of our leading coaches Pam Badani was conducting a standard coaching session at Leisure World Thornlie when one of Thornlie masters members Helen McPherson suffered a heart attack and was dragged from the pool. Coach Pam was quick to administer first aid which involved CPR and Helen has since made a full recovery. Pam has been awarded a Gold Start Bravery Award from Royal Lifesaving along with the pool lifeguards who were involved. (Pam with her awards and Helen and the Thornlie Masters members) Well done Pam. See attached Community News article for more details!

Talking of safety one of our past members Bryn Martin who was taken by a shark at Cottesloe Beach highlights the need for being considerate of your surroundings when swimming in the ocean.  I know we have been doing it for years and it will be alright but please use some brains when swimming in the ocean. I want to see you all for many years to come.

I want to take this time to thank all the Board members for their work during the year and to our hard working office staff Wendy and Nadine. To all our readers and supporters have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Until next time.

Increase in WA member numbers

Congratulations to Clubs on retaining members and gaining new members during 2011 as we have increased membership by nearly 5%, moving from 1376 to 1442 in total.  Again we are the only State to increase membership!

Membership growth strategies implemented through part-time Project Coordinator Nadine Georgiades under Gary Bradley’s Development port-folio has seen 2 more Clubs (Central Aquatic at Bayswater Waves and Wanneroo Masters at Wanneroo Aquamotion) affiliate plus Barracudas Masters re-affiliate in November.  A Masters group is swimming regularly at the Davies Road Claremont pool with help from Gary and Nadine with a view to starting a Club there.  Also Bunbury is growing again with thanks to the keen Coaches down there plus our new Kwinana Club is increasing numbers with an enthusiastic new Coach.

Masters Swimming WA Open Water Swims Series

Keen open water swimming members will be well into the OWS season by now and all should be aware of our OWS Series (see back of 2011/12 OWS calendar) which is only open to MSWA members.  Members earn points for OWS events run by MSWA Clubs so if aiming to be in with a chance to top your age-group at the end of the summer season, you should read the information sheet attached or via our website

Correspondence Country Carnival

MSWA has resurrected this event for country Clubs and it will be conducted in January and February 2012.  Country members are encouraged to participate in the organised meets during these months especially in preparation for the 2012 State Championships to be held in Bunbury on 4th & 5th March.

Annual General Meeting

This important meeting is coming up on Tuesday 21st February and Clubs have been asked to send in a short report of highlights and achievements for 2011 for MSWA’s Annual Report.  Presentations at the AGM include the winning Clubs for the 2011 Be Active Club Challenge (BACC) series and the Be Active Spring into Swimming membership drive.

2012 Pool Events Calendar

The BACC and Distance Meets calendar has been finalised and produced for distribution to members via their Clubs in early January.

The new Coaching Courses which replaced the old Level 1 Masters Course commenced late October with the initial Intro Coach Course and the accreditation component Club Coach Course was  held on Sunday 11th December.  Director of Coaching ‘Tricia Summerfield has coordinated the courses with presenters Kim Tyler (Fremantle) and Elena Nesci (Claremont) and it is planned to conduct the courses again early in 2012.

Intro Coaching Course Saturday 11th February

Club Coach Course Sunday 25th March

Registration forms will be available soon.  For further information regarding course detail please visit our National website and look under the Coaching Courses heading, .

Pre-requisite units in both courses include on-line components through the Australian Sports Commission, which cuts down the amount of time required for the remainder of the units conducted face-to-face over 4 hours.  Once the Club Coach Course and all subsequent requirements have been completed and Coaches assessed as competent they are accredited through Masters Swimming Australia.  Coaching is the major benefit at Masters Clubs!

Stadium Snappers

Snappers took part in our last BE ACTIVE Club Challenge for the season at Fremantle in October and were very pleased that our team swam well enough to finish second to the host club. Bad luck that the giant crocodile took to the water before the medley relays could be run! Thanks to Fremantle for their carnival and super lunch.

A handful of hearty hardies began the 2011-2012 Open Water Swim series at Lake Leschenaultia. Maida Vale was right. There were no sharks! Nor were there stingers nor jellyfish and none of us picked up any leeches although we watched some blokes communally grooming on shore afterwards.
