What a wonderful Jennian Homes New Zealand Track & Field Championships in Hamilton! Great weather, big entries, fantastic venue, excellent crowd and some wonderful  performances by athletes. Read on to find out more about the championships.

Internationally, we saw Jake Robertson run an amazing half marathon in Portugal, winning the IAAF Gold Label race in 60:01, just 14 seconds behind his twin brother Zane's national record. In Mexico Racewalker Quentin Rew grabbed a podium finish for third in the IAAF RW Challenge 50km in Mexico.

This weekend there’s a national championship event in Queenstown – the 2017 NZ Mountain Running Championships. We’re looking forward to some very competitive racing on this year’s up and down course, so if you are racing, supporting or watching, we hope you have a good weekend.

In this issue of Athletics in Action we talk to Dr Paul Gamble,  the coach guiding our fastest ever 200m runner, Joseph Millar, we chat with eight-time NZ discus champion Marshall Hall about his journey and the future and we catch up with racewalker Alana Barber for our “Five minutes with …” segment.

Joseph Millar shattered the 20-year-old national 200m record to complete the sprint double at the Jennian Homes New Zealand Track & Field Championships last weekend Steve Landells speaks to Joseph’s coach, Dr Paul Gamble, to find out just how the World Championship-bound athlete achieved the feat.

Athletics NZ CE departing


Athletics New Zealand Board Chair Annette Purvis announced today that Chief Executive Linda Hamersley has tendered her resignation and will leave the role in September 2017.The Board received the resignation with much disappointment but understand Hamersley’s need to move back to Australia to join her husband Colin Batch who was recently appointed as the Australian Men’s Hockey Coach.

Masters Matters


If you want to travel, join NZ Masters Athletics! This issue we report that a group of Kiwi masters athletes are in South Korea for the World Masters Indoor Champs, incorporating winter cross country. Above are distance runners Michael Wray (left) and Jason Cameron, both gold medallists for their age grades in cross country. 
There are bound to be many NZ Masters athletes competing in the World Masters Games in Auckland next month. We’ll bring you more about that in upcoming issues.

Jennian Homes 2017 NZ Track & Field Champs


What a fantastic weekend at national champs! If you were at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton over the weekend, you would have witnessed a marvellous NZ championships event. If you weren’t there you may have been one of over 6,000 viewers we had watching our live-stream each day. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all the coaches, officials, volunteers and fans who supported the championships. We’ll be back in Hamilton for the 2018 championships – date to be confirmed shortly.

Upcoming NZ Championship Events

This Saturday will see the  NZ Mountain Running Champs  in Queenstown.
There are currently no championship entries open, but watch out for our next stand-alone championship event, the New Zealand Cross Country Championships in July.

 

Secondary Schools

Secondary Schools athletes are particularly busy at this stage of the season. Schools have completed their school champs, are now into Zone and Regional champs, followed by the North and South Island Champs in Dunedin and Inglewood. If you’ve qualified for the next stage, congratulations, we hope it goes well – and have a blast!

Children's Athletics

We’re at the end of the children’s athletics season with Regional champs around the country all finished.  Just the Grade 12 & 13 Interprovincial to go at Easter. We hope the thousands of children in athletics clubs have had a wonderful summer, learning new skills, making new friends, having fun and for many,  enjoying a new sport. No doubt many kids who did athletics over the summer will benefit from the improved fitness, speed and skills in their winter sports.  See you all next summer!

Official Chat

A shout out to the more than 120 graded officials who were involved in the Jennian Homes NZ Track & Field Champs over the weekend. It’s clear that working at the Champs is a highlight for officials and we have many that travel big distances to officiate there. We had 45 officials from the host Centre Waikato Bay of Plenty, 27 from Canterbury, 17 from Auckland, 13 from Wellington and others from Northland, Taranaki, Manawatu Wanganui, Otago and Southland.  It’s great to see these experts turned out very smartly and enjoying their work at the championships. THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS OFFICIALS!

Athletics New Zealand's High Performance Athlete Development (HPAD) programme is critical to sustaining future Athletics High Performance success. By using pre-carding HPAD programmes as well as the Athletics NZ event group plans, Athletics New Zealand is providing information and development opportunities appropriate to the athlete’s stage of development.

Para athlete news

Congratulations to Jarrod Scott who has been appointed a Para athlete Classifier. Jarrod is a physiotherapist in Dunedin and was part of the support team for the Athletics team at the Rio Paralympics. Jarrod joins Rebecca Fulsham as the two specialist Para athletics classifiers in New Zealand and as such there will now be more opportunities to have athletes classified and into competition.

 

Rankings 

We’ve had 1450 performances added to our Rankings database so far in March, including 869 in Hamilton at the Jennian Homes NZ Track & Field Championships. It’s kept our statistician Steve Hollings very busy but he’s fully up to date. With so many recent performances added, there have been many changes in the rankings for all age grades
