Hi Clubs,

Welcome to the September edition of Club Chat.  What a great few months Athletics has had with the success of both the Olympic and Paralympic teams in Rio.  In this newsletter we reveal the winner of the #weareathletics social media support campaign.  Who will be the athletes favourite?

The community team have had a busy couple of months helping schools and clubs around the country prepare for what should be an epic summer of athletics.  We've had heaps of fun upskilling coaches and teachers, running club planning workshops and working on resources to help clubs operate.  Look out for an email in the next couple of weeks with some important information about Health & Safety...something I'm sure you've all been waiting for.

To all the winter clubs I hope you have had a great Harrier season and I look forward to seeing many of you over the weekend at Road Relays Champs.  For the summer club I hope the pre season planning is going well and you are all ready for a fun and enjoyable summer of athletics.  – Cat O’Sullivan

Social Media Competition - #weareathletics

During the Olympics and Paralympics Athletics NZ ran a social media competition encouraging clubs, schools and groups to show their support of the teams in Rio. They were required to post a video or picture supporting, imitating or congratulating the team or team members. Thanks for all the great entries and Congratulation to the two clubs below.

People’s Choice: Scottish Athletics Club

Athletes Choice: Pakuranga Junior Athletics Club

In case you missed it Athletics NZ created a video of support video too.  Check it out

Pole Vault – For Kids

Off the back of some awesome performances in Rio we are hoping kids are going to be super excited about athletics this summer and in particular Pole Vault.  We would love kids to be able to give pole vault (or the modified version called pole flying) a go at their local clubs.  If you would like to give it a go in your club we have a limited amount of child size fibre class poles available.  If you would like to purchase poles they are $40 each (including postage) and are available at the Athletics NZ online shop.  Be quick as the offer closes tomorrow

Club Case Studies

We believe case studies are a great way to share good news stories and good practice models happening in Athletics. It’s our aim to share as many of your stories as possible so we can all learn from each other.  Check out the case studies we already have on the Athletics NZ website.

We would love to share your story.  We have a $100 Sports Distributor voucher to give away each month to the best case study submitted.  The case study will also be published on our website and given to you to share with your community.

All you need to do is fill in the Case Study entry form and email it to Catherine@athletics.org.nz before the 20th of each month.  The winning case study will be published at the start of the following month.

Club Connect 2016

On 6 August Athletics NZ held its annual club connect conference in Auckland. 85 People from 44 clubs attended.  It was a great day and all the Athletics NZ staff enjoyed connecting with you all. We hope that everyone who attended went away with some helpful new information.  If you missed it this year make sure you check out what was presented and if you have any feedback or suggestions for topics for next year we would love to hear from you.

TempoFit: A running programme for recreational runners

TempoFit started in Auckland in 2013 as a 6-week fitness programme to assist casual runners towards their running goals. Its mission statement is to help everyday Kiwis fall in love with running through fun, high-energy workouts that teach technique and speed development in a supportive, social environment.

Athletics NZ has partnered with TempoFit to deliver the programme throughout New Zealand via clubs (currently in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin). It's a great way for clubs to engage adult runners in their area and to provide an additional training option to their current members (registered club members receive 50% off the TempoFit price).

A 6-week season costs $119 and includes three coached workouts per week and plenty of digestible online content and engagement. Coaches are paid and are typically selected from the host club/s, with full training and session plans provided. Let us know if you’d like to be involved.

See www.tempofit.org for details.

Point Chevalier Athletics Club: Great example of club promotion

Driving past a busy intersection in Auckland the other day we came across some great promotion from Pt Chevalier Athletics Club.

We really like this promotion for a few reasons;

  • Highly visual street posters

  • Great link to winter sports codes done with creative photography.

  • located on the fence of a primary school showing the club have connected with their local stakeholders and is a place where they can recruit members from.

  • Fantastic location at a busy local intersection where lots of cars go past.

Well done Pt Chev. How do you promote your club?  We would love to see other examples.

If you are after other ideas to promote your club, have a look at the ‘Promoting Your Club' resource on the Athletics NZ website.

Good Sports is a culture change project aiming to create a positive sports environment for children aged 7-13 years old in order to encourage life-long participation in sport. It is a pilot project being trialled across eight Auckland locations, primarily targeting parents and is led by Aktive - Auckland Sport & Recreation

When Kiwi kids have positive sporting experiences there are lasting and wide-ranging benefits to those children and their communities. Parents are the biggest key to providing positive experiences. Good Sports ultimately encourages all kids to express themselves and enjoy every aspect of the sports they play.

The support from Good Sports extends beyond parents, to coaches, teachers, schools and community sport leaders. The support helps those adults understand and identify the needs of children whilst meeting the expectations of all participants in community sport. Athletics New Zealand has been involved in the pilot since it began almost 12 months ago, with the aim to help and encourage age appropriate coaching and competition opportunities as well as positive parent involvement in Athletics.  For more information check out their Facebook page
