Who is Sverre Andreas Kaaten - Australian Dictionary of BiographyHave you ever wondered about the man behind the name of the Nordic Shelter - Sverre Kaaten? Following is a brief bio of this man's amazing life. Sverre Andreas Kaaten (1908-1991), skier and businessman, was born on 26 July 1908 at Kongsvinger, Norway, third of seven children of Andreas Eberhardt Kaaten, timber merchant, and his wife Olga, née Lie. Sverre began skiing at the age of five and had jumping skis by twelve. He tackled Oslo’s famous Holmenkollen ski jump as a teenager. Hopes to study architecture were dashed by family financial problems, and instead he joined a paper-making mill. Aware of the existence of Australia’s snowfields and with an uncle running a paper business in Melbourne, he sailed for Australia in March 1928. |

NSW Junior SeriesThe NSW Junior Series was held recently over two weekends. The first leg at Thredbo, concluding with the final weekend at Perisher on the 8th August. The event was filled with lots of action and saw competitors as young as six years old competing against some of our most promising 19 year olds juniors. The level of competition was very high and we saw many tricks being thrown at all ages which were unheard of at this level even five years ago. Sophie Ash one of our most promising Junior female skiers completed her first Back-full trick in competition and became one of only a few girls in the World to achieve this on snow. We also saw young Will Feneley throw his heart stopping front flip and many other amazing tricks. |
