2012/2013 NSWIS Scholarship Holders

NSW Snowsports wish to congratulate our member athletes who have recently been announced as 2012/13 NSWIS Scholarship holders. These athletes have been selected based on their overseas performances and achievement of NSWIS selection criteria’s.  

The NSWIS scholarships offer world class training facilities and coaching with a focus on supporting athletes competing at an open international level, which is vital leading into the Sochi 2014 qualification period.

SERAS Athletes Get Set for Snow Season

The South East Regional Academy of Sport (SERAS) Snowsports Program held its first training camp for 2012 at the University of Canberra (UC) on the weekend of the 12th and 13th May. 

Run in partnership with NSW Snowsports and Snowsports ACT, the program is designed to focus on the physiological, psychological and personal development of the 17 scholarship holders. The young athletes are drawn from across NSW and the ACT and represent the disciplines of alpine skiing, ski cross, freestyle moguls, cross country skiing and snowboarding.

Weekly Preseason Training Sessions

Applications are NOW OPEN for the Term 2, weekly pre season fitness training sessions in North Sydney and Jindabyne

Alpine Officials Training Courses - Level 1 Accreditation

This officially recognised training course is for parents, teachers, coaches and volunteers who may be assisting at Interschool, Club, SSA or FIS Alpine races.

The 2 hr course covers the role of the official, race safety, race rules, race organisation, time keeping and use of radio communications. It is aimed at both new volunteers and those who accreditation has expired and need a refresher course (those accredited prior to 2008).

Final Dry-Land Training Camps

NSWXC will be conducting the following Training Camps in May and June in the lead up to the snow season. All Team and Squad members are invited to attend. New skiers who would like to become involved in XC skiing are most welcome to come and try by attending one of the upcoming training sessions.

XC Instructor and Coaches Courses

A number of XC Coach and XC Instructor qualification courses will be offered this winter.  APSI will be conducting various levels of instructor courses and depending on the interest a Coach level 1 may be conducted in NSW by Finn Marsland. (A coach level 1 is being conducted in VIC this winter)

Other XC News 

  1. Sydney athletes had a cross country camp  on 10 and 11 April and it was very well attended. Cameron Morton, conducted an intensive program focusing on skills and technique and was ably assisted by Sarah Slattery.  Andrew Murphy of Trinity College conducted bleep testing of the athletes, which is a multi stage fitness and aerobic test to determine fitness levels. Sydney athletes continue to take an increased interest in year round training for the sport.  There are scheduled roller ski training days and training at the gym each weekend.  Cross country skiers are welcome to join in the training.   2. Some NSWXC athletes were invited by Finn Marsland, Head Coach for the Australian Cross Country National Team, for testing at the AIS in April.Daniel Walker, Jill Colebourn, Alex Lewis and Tess Noble, joined Australian Junior Team Members at the AIS for testing including tests on the VO2 equipment. 
     
  3. SSA held the Australian Roller Ski Championships in Canberra on 14 and 15 April.  The event was also a fund raiser for the Amelia McGuiness SnowSports Development Foundation.  It was a fantastic event, with Mark van der Ploeg from Phillip, ACT winning the 2.2km Classic Hill Climb and 15-year-old junior Hamish Roberts from Red Hill, ACT winning both the Sprint Freestyle and Mass Start Freestyle events at the Stromlo Forest Park.
