2012 Youth/Junior Biathlon World Championships

Three members of NSW Snowsports recently represented Australia at the Youth and Junior Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti, Finland. NSWXC and NSW Biathlon athletes Daniel Walker, Damon Morton and Lucy Glanville along with NSW coaches Nick Almoukov and Cameron Morton were the largest group of NSW athletes to ever represent Australia at a Junior Biathlon World Championships.

All 3 athletes competed in the Youth Category (U19) and for Daniel and Damon it was their first experience of a Junior World Championships. All 3 athletes found the competition of very high standard but were still able to achieve encouraging results. Both Daniel and Lucy have one more year to compete as Youth Biathletes with Damon at just 15years of age having 3 more years at this level.

2012 Biathlon World Championships

Two member s of NSW Snowsports recently represented Australia at the 2012 Biathlon World Championships in Ruhpolding, Germany. Together with the Winter Olympic Games, the World Championships are the highest level competition for Biathlon each year.

NSWXC and NSW Biathlon members, Alex Almoukov and Lucy Glanville represented Australia and gained valuable Olympic qualification points, as in Biathlon the World Championships are the pathway to Olympic qualification. For Lucy this was her first World Championships and she was the youngest competitor, while for Alex it was his 3rd World Championships. Competing at this World Championships started the process for Alex to gain his 2nd Olympic qualification, after representing Australia in Vancouver in 2010.

NSWXC Athlete Competes at Junior World

Congratulations to NSWXC Team member Hamish Roberts for his selection to the Australian Junior Cross County World Championship Team. Hamish travelled to Erzurum in Turkey for this event and this is the first time the World Junior Championships have taken place in Turkey. The growing winter resort of Erzurum presented excellent snow conditions, well-prepared courses in venues that had been built for the Winter Universiade 2011 and beautiful weather, with blue skies and sunshine.
